The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is part of the routine infant immunization schedule in the U.S. and is recommended for all children < 2 years of age and children 2-4 years of age who have certain medical conditions. Fever can sometimes be the only signs of pneumonia in children. Pneumonia is caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms.
The incidence of pneumonia is greater in males than in females, and the number of deaths due to pneumonia has been higher among females since the mid 1980s. Fungal pneumonia is uncommon, but it may occur in individuals with weakened immune systems due to AIDS, immunosuppressive drugs, or other medical problems. Sometimes, fluid collects in the pleural space around the lung as a result of the inflammation from pneumonia.
