High fever, headache, nose and mouth bleeding, muscle and joints pain, vomiting, rash and diarrhea are the most common Dengue fever symptoms. In critical phase patient can experience hypo-tension, gastrointestinal bleeding and pleural effusion. Typically, people infected with dengue virus are asymptomatic (80%) or only have mild symptoms such as an uncomplicated fever. Others have more severe illness (5%), and in a small proportion it is life-threatening. In the United States, approximately 100 cases of Dengue are reported each year in travelers returning from tropical areas, but they could be more as the asymptomatic forms are not reported.
